2021 we commemorate the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Holocaust in Lithuania. During several months of summer and autumn, Lithuanian Jewish communities were completely destroyed. In commemoration of these painful historical events, the International Commission for the Evaluation of the Crimes of the Nazi and Soviet Occupation Regimes in Lithuania, together with Alytus City Municipality and other partners, is initiating the national project “Memory Road 1941 - 2021”.
September 8 The events of this project will take place in Alytus city. They will start at 11 p.m. Memorial Road March to Commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Holocaust. During the march, the sites of the murder of Jews will be visited. The procession in Alytus will start in the Old Town Square and will continue until the Jewish Massacre Memorial in Vidzgiris Forest. The participants of the march are offered to bring pebbles with the names of the Jews living in Alytus written on them - both respect for the historically established Jewish tradition of carrying pebbles to the cemetery, and personalization of the Holocaust victims.
12 p.m. a memorial road ceremony will take place at the Star of David Memorial to the Jewish Massacre in Vidzgiris Forest.
3 p.m. Alytus residents and guests are invited to the opening of the Alytus Synagogue, now called the Audiovisual Arts Center.
After that, a concert by Rakia Klemzer Oskertral will take place at the Audiovisual Arts Center.
