The cemetery is located in Alytus I, the part of the city on the right side of Nemunas, near the Russian Orthodox cemetery. The cemetery is bounded by an authentic, irregularly-rectangular stone wall.
There are several hundred Jewish graves, but most of them are withouth grave markers. It is thought that the first burials were made in the cemetery when the Jews took up residence in the city in the 18th century, and the burials continued until 1941. The oldest grave marker is dated 1755. Members of the Jewish community from Alytus I were buried here.
In most of the cemetery, grave sites are not visible and grave markers no longer remain. Up to 50 grave markers remain visible in an area near the entrance. Due to the hilly landscape, the graves were not oriented in any particular direction; graves were oriented in various directions.
The cemetery is listed on the Register of Immovable Cultural Heritage of the Republic of Lithuania.
