Tourism news 2023: Let's celebrate Dzūkija

In 2023, the region of Alytus will welcome curious travelers not only by celebrating the year of the Dzūkija (Dainava) region but also by offering new routes, educational programs, entertainment, and attractions that will interest and excite them.

Tourists can embark on a trip to Nemunaitis, a chance to visit the Great Stone of Dzūkija, the place where the partisans of A. Ramanauskas-Vanagas took the oath, one of the most beautiful Lourdes Grottoes in the country, and drink from the Nemunaitis spring. Those not afraid of natural challenges will admire the only outcrop of calcareous tuffs in Southern Lithuania. So that travelers can see even more intriguing places - the Alytus Tourism Information Center has prepared an exciting route around the most interesting places in the town and its surroundings.

At the beginning of the tourist season, Butrimonys will welcome travelers not only with the only well-known vortical fountain in Lithuania but also with the new, modernly equipped Butrimonys Museum (31 Vytauto Street, Butrimonys, Alytus district). It reflects the destinies of the Lithuanian, Jewish, and Tatar communities who have lived here since ancient times. The town's triangular square is a symbol of all three communities uniting. The expositions tell about their traditions, customs, cultural and culinary heritage, crafts, and religion.

At the birthplace of the poet Onė Baliukonė in Kančėnai (Dusmenų str. 16 C, Kančėnai k., Daugai sen., Alytus district), tourists will be greeted by an almost 100-year-old garden. A memorial stone dedicated to the memory of the poet stands nearby. After opening the ancient gates of the homestead, the path will lead to a unique place in the garden - the Purple Cat's abode. The sculpture of a purple cat sitting on a bench is a realization of the poet's significant dream (author of the statue -  Artūras Zienka). On the site of the desolated residential house, there's a custom-made house of books, in the shade of the apple trees in the garden - a reading bench.

Alytus Jaunimas (Youth) Park has one of the most modern children's playgrounds in Lithuania, elegantly interspersed among original metal and plastic sculptures. You won't be bored in the adventure park Tarzania, either. While the parents try the newly opened 18-hole mini golf course, the little ones will have fun in the various entertainment areas.

Cheese lovers and foodies will not be disappointed when they visit the "Royal cheeses" at the Alvydas Pauliukėnas farm (Ateities st. 4, Butrimonys, tel. +370 684 30 552), where tourists can taste up to 70 original recipe cheeses.

Those who enjoy water activities can go on a kayaking trip to Nemunas with Darius Glušauskas (kelionesupe.lt). And in the evening, enjoy meals cooked on the fire in an authentic Uzbek Kazan.

Cycling and hiking enthusiasts will be able to appreciate Alytus' cycling and hiking trails. They span almost 40 km from the city. It is spread out in the most beautiful places: by the Nemunas, Dailidė (Carpenter) lakes, on the former railway embankment, in parks and squares. While traveling along the former shore towards the highest pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Lithuania, tourists will be greeted with a surprise - two carriages of the former train "M 23". In one, there is a cozy cafe, with a special dessert of interwar Alytus, when it was a resort, which even the ladies of Kaunas came to taste. On the other, there is a museum of the history of the former Alytus region railway.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Lithuanian basketball, an original monument was built in Butrimonys in memory of Senda Valvrojenski (Berenson-Abbott), who was born and grew up here until the age of 7. She was the first to apply basketball rules to women and organized the first basketball competition among women. Senda was inducted into the USA Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987. - to the International Jewish Sports Museum, and in 1999 - to the Women's Basketball Museum.

In Alytus, in Anzelmos Matutis Park, tourists will be able not only to admire but also to take charming selfies next to the new wooden sculptures depicting the characters of the children's poet's poems. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the poet Anzelmas Matutis - on that occasion, wood carvers gathered for a symposium and presented new fascinating works, which gracefully disappeared among the 35 wood sculptures that were already here.
